DEARBORN MID-WEST CONVEYOR CO.
was established as a legal operating entity in May of 1996, but its history and roots date back to 1947. Today DMW is the result of merging two respected, full-service material handling companies whose separate growth paths were different, yet parallel. Dearborn Fabricating & Engineering Corp. was founded in 1947 in the State of Michigan. Two families, Dunville and Wells began operation in a 10,000 sq.ft. facility in Dearborn, but quickly moved to a larger location in Detroit. Initially, the Company supplied and installed crane systems, but expanded into conveyors with the purchase of the American Cable Company in 1956. Providing overhead and floor conveyor systems to the Automotive Market soon became the main focus at the Company. In 1983, the Company was actively put up for sale. In early 1984, Management, along with select employees, purchased the Company. In October 1987, Philips Industries of Dayton, Ohio purchased the Company. In 1988, Dearborn purchased the Overhead Power and Free line from Taylor and Gaskin and the complete crane business of Unified Industries of Howell, Michigan.
While Dearborn Fabricating was growing, the other main branch of the new Company, Mid-West Conveyor, was also making its presence known in the Material Handling Industry. Mid-West Conveyor Co. officially began operations on January 1, 1947, under the guidance of Harlan Potter, Omer Potter, and Vernon Street. The Company also grew into a full-system conveyor supplier and was acquired by Conergics Co. in 1970. The expanded operations of Conergics was sold to Foster Wheeler Corp. in 1984 and then again to Philips Industries in 1988. From 1988 to 1990, both Dearborn and Mid-West operated independently under Philips Industries and were both eventually sold as part of the large buy-out of Philips by Tomkins PLC, a London England, based manufacturing conglomerate.
In 1994, organizational control of both companies shifted to the management in Detroit. A consolidation of effort and the elimination of duplicate services resulted in the stronger, new company operating today under the name of Dearborn Mid-West Conveyor Co. The merging of these two strong companies proved again, that "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts”. In 1998, the company built a new Administrative Building and Manufacturing Facility at our present location in Taylor. The companies that evolved into the new Dearborn Mid-West Conveyor Co. grew from combined Sales in 1947, of under $1 million, to over $200 million today.
